Day 7 – Clifden

image

Now almost a week into the trip, and I’m heading to Clifden where I will spend three nights. After stopping on the outskirts of Galway for fuel and lunch, it’s not long before I’m in the Connemara National Park. This has the Highland of Scotland look, a bit like areas of the Dingle peninsula.

It doesn’t take too much longer to get to the campsite, my total mileage is only 100 for today. There doesn’t appear to be anyone else on the site so I’m offered any pitch I want. Clearly, I’m going to take the best one right on the edge of the beach, aren’t I?

A little while later another motor home turns up – I recognised it from the Doolin campsite I left this morning. They are a nice couple from New Zealand but I didn’t chat too long as I have a very broken Continue reading Day 7 – Clifden →

Day 6 – Limerick & Doolin

IMAG0668A much quieter day today. After a hearty breakfast and packing up at Sir Roger’s I headed out towards Limerick and stopped at a Tesco on the outskirts of the town. Just having a few items to run through the till, I went to the self service tills to save a little time but noticed there were no carrier bags!

I called the girl over and she asked how many carrier bags I wanted, letting me know that they were 22 cents each. These were not “bag for life” items but the plan, thin bags you get for free at Tesco in the UK. She had to go away to get them – presumably, at that price, she got them out of the safe? Outrageous!

It got worse. Going round the back of Tescos to return to the main road, I hit another massive bump and had the front wheels off the floor again. Once on the M18 motorway and up to over 60MPH the steering column started to vibrate violently up and down. So… I’ve either lost a wheel weight with these “airborne” moments, or bent one of the front wheels. Poor van 🙁

IMAG0672The one highlight of the day was turning up at the campsite at Doolin – this turned out to be a lovely find. This is right on the Atlantic coast and is something of a surfers paradise. There’s a little village on the way in, so I may head up there tonight for a Guinness or two.

Being 9.5 degrees West, the sunset and sunrise are noticeably later here.
