Day 3 – Timoleague & Killarney

The third day of my trip now and I’m really getting into the swing of things. Sadly, the rain is getting into the swing of things too. I woke to 48MPH gusts and driving rain rocking the van from side to side.

IMG_0134 As a last minute change of plan I ditched the idea of going to Cork due to the bad wind and rain. Instead the van headed to the outskirts of the city to pick up supplies from a Lidl then off to Beal na m’Blath – this is where Irish army leader, Michael Collins was ambushed and killed and a memorial has been built at the side of the road in commemoration. Thankfully, it had stopped tipping down when I got there.

IMG_0138Moving on from Beal na m’Blath I went to Timoleague which turned out to be a very beautiful place indeed. There’s a small village on the edge of the lake and a ruined abbey to complete the scene.

I arrived at the campsite, but couldn’t raise any of the wardens to let them know I was there. After half an hour, I gave up and made my way to Killarney.

The outcome of this is I could whinge about the rain driving me away from Cork, or the campsite owners being inattentive, but the real bonus here is I arrived in Killarney two days early. This allows me to drive the whole 112 mile stint round the ring of Kerry and possible do the Dingle peninsula as well.

IMAG0652It’s my birthday tomorrow and the girl at the Killarney campsite has told me about Danny’s Bar in the town. It’s the only one that does the traditional Irish music, allegedly every night. Excuse me while I go out and sample some traditional music washed down with Guinness!

Today I took a walk to the “centre Ville”, or town centre which is 3.8km from the campsite. Check out the church above; it’s difficult to get an idea of scale unless you look at buildings on the right. A truly massive building, out of proportion for a small place like this.

The centre of town, when I got there was silent. Everything is closed on this Sunday afternoon. Indeed, it’s so dead here, the town should be twinned with Stornoway.

The back streets provide some interesting attractions such as Jesus on the cross, or the bicycle turned into a planter, below.

Well that’s it for today. It’s quarter past six local time as I write this and the rain is beating heavily on the roof of the van.

Tomorrow takes the Sooty Van away from the French forests and into Germany. Keep an eye on progress with http://tinyurl.com/sootytrack

Day 19: Des Grangettes to Troyes

It’s day 19 and time to say goodbye to the most expensive country in the world and head for France.

The first part of the journey through France is on village type roads rather than the motorways I was expecting. Anyway, the TomTom seems to get it right most of the time, but I’m not complaining as the empty country roads are a delight to drive on.

I do eventually get to the motorway and want to head off for some fuel and a bite to eat. Leaving the motorway exit means going through a toll. The lady in front is having problems getting through and came over to me giving it large and I hadn’t a clue what she was saying. “Sorry, don’t understand, non parlez Francais”, she went back to her car, tried again, then came back giving it large again. Maybe she thought I had learned to speak French in the 60 seconds she was away from me! At the time the picture was taken, she had cleared off altogether.

A French speaker in a car further back came and helped her, ticket goes in the hole marked ticket, credit card goes in the hole marked payment. Simples.

Further down the motorway it started to rain, what a treat! I hadn’t seen any rain for nearly 3 weeks, only scorching sunshine and flies.

It’s a sure fact that the closer I get back to England, the shittier the weather gets. It’s also cooling down a little which makes things more comfortable for me.

Found the campsite at Troyes OK, had pre-booked a pitch and was told to pick any vacant pitch I wanted.

There’s a supermarket 50m from the entrance of the campsite, it’s one of those Leader ones which is a bit like Lidl. 10 bottles of beer for 2.09 Euro, what a difference to the prices in Switzerland?

I’ll settle in for the night and grab a bus to the centre of Troyes in the morning, it’s supposed to be a picturesque medieval centre so I’m looking forward to taking some snaps.

Day 2: Nideggen to Nuremberg

After my overnighter in Campingplatz Hetzingen, I’m making a dash down to Nuremberg where I will be staying for two nights.

I’m just about OK with this driving on the right now, I’ve even stopped going round roundabouts the wrong way.  And I thought all those people tooting and waving at me just wanted to be my new friends 🙁

Today was my first attempt at going on the autobahn.  I got onto a clear autobahn at 8.30 this morning and within 5 seconds a large Merc went past me right on the limiter (250 kmh).  There was a bit of a shockwave hit the van and it was a bit of a shock for me too – I just didn’t expect it.

The rest of the journey was uneventful.  Overtaking can be difficult as you’re using the wrong side mirror and traffic can (and does) come up at speeds in excess of 100 MPH so you really have to take care.  I put it off for a while and kept to my cruise of around 55 MPH.  However, I ran into a car and trailer doing less than 50 so had to overtake.

Sooty van was doing over 70 during this dicey manouver, wahey! This would, of course, be illegal in the UK ha ha…

Anyway, I arrived in the Bavarian city of Nuremberg unscathed and tried to find a space in the campsite.  It was rammed out, the lady pitched next to me explained that they, and many others, were on a Jehovah’s Witness conference in the Easycredit Stadium next door.

As I write this, it’s 8PM in Germany and 7PM in England.  The Germans are interested in the outcome of this evening’s match, I’m just waiting for it to start with the doors and windows wide open, listening to the light rain coming down on the roof.  Tomorrow will be pretty rainy so I’m not sure how far I will be venturing.  A trip to the Altstadt (old town) is looking less likely…

Travel Blog 2011

I’m retrospectively adding the trips from 2011 to the Travel Blog 2011 page starting with the Western Isles trip from December.

More will go on as time permits (or the weather is rubbish and I can’t do anything outside).

Roll on the summer!

Well, a washed out Bank Holiday weekend scuppered my Walton-on-Thames soiree (along with being ill didn’t help).  Seriously, I’m having difficulty remembering an Easter BH when it didn’t pour down with rain – what’s happening to this global warming we’ve been investing heavily in?

At least there’s some trips lined up on the Calendar, hopefully the weather will improve back to where it was a couple of weeks ago when I was seriously thinking of reaching for the sun cream.  Next trip out Brands Hatch for the first BMCRC F1/F2 sidecar race of the season, let’s hope this poxy rain has gone next weekend for them so they can have some pleasant and safe racing.
