Saint-Amand-Les-Eaux

Today I took a walk to the “centre Ville”, or town centre which is 3.8km from the campsite. Check out the church above; it’s difficult to get an idea of scale unless you look at buildings on the right. A truly massive building, out of proportion for a small place like this.

The centre of town, when I got there was silent. Everything is closed on this Sunday afternoon. Indeed, it’s so dead here, the town should be twinned with Stornoway.

The back streets provide some interesting attractions such as Jesus on the cross, or the bicycle turned into a planter, below.

Well that’s it for today. It’s quarter past six local time as I write this and the rain is beating heavily on the roof of the van.

Tomorrow takes the Sooty Van away from the French forests and into Germany. Keep an eye on progress with http://tinyurl.com/sootytrack

des Mont de Bruyères

I’ve now settled in at Camping des Mont Bruyères in the French commune of Saint-Amand-Les-Eaux. Located in the North East of France, the area is encircled by the Scarpe/Escaut National Park; a large forest of 5000 hectares.

This being rural France, you can never go too far without running into some chooks. They are great for recycling waste food 🙂

The site has only just opened for the season, so very few here. That said, I will check the shop and bar out when they open at 5PM. Later on I can do some googling and find out what’s in the area, may do a bit of walking tomorrow.

One week to go :)

[countdown date=2013/03/16-04:00]Counting down [timer] until I set off for the Europe 2013 mini trip.

[/countdown]p1000423_b_roadThe clock has ticked by very quickly, it’s now only one week to go as I write this before I’ll be driving through the countryside and forests looking for Saint-Amand-les-Eaux in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France.

Most of the prerequisites have been carried out, such as converting the headlamps to left hand drive side. There are a few odd jobs to do such as fill the water tank and sort out some food items. This can all be carried out tomorrow, and I will give the van a much needed wash down as well.

The longer term weather forecast for my week away is going to be “cool”. The forecast for Valenciennes (the nearest town to the commune of Saint-Amand-les-Eaux) is showing 7C max and 1C min for Saturday 16th March. Unfortunately the forecast for the venues is one of rain so I may have to wrap up well for my strolls in the forest!
