Day 12 – Derry

It was my intention to go to Malin Head today, but (a) it was raining, (b) the van is unwell and (c) I didn’t have the energy to do another long drive today.

IMAG0716I settled for a fairly straight run of 40 plus miles to the Elaghvale Campsite just west of central Derry. It’s on farmland just outside the metropolis and situated in rolling hills. 30 yards to the right of the van is a ditch and this marks the border between the UK and Republic of Ireland.

Before arriving at the campsite I had a scout round for a cash machine as I have plenty Euros but no Sterling. Didn’t seem to have much luck with this and ended up driving through the West side of Derry and down the river Foyle back out of town again.

Returning back into Derry I ended up on the Creggan Estate. Couldn’t find a cash machine here either, but noticed there were numerous Irish flags adorning the houses. Returning West I ended up in a Sainsburys on a retail park and got the needed readies there.

Back at the site I’ve settled down to make a nice beef stew – meat is so much cheaper in the Republic, I stocked up on the way in!

Tomorrow, I will visit the Guildhall and hope to pick up a guided tour of the Bogside from there, along with seeing some of the other sights of the City. The campsite owner advises that a taxi is £6 each way so I won’t bother walking a mile down to the A2 in the morning for a bus.

Should get some more pictures tomorrow.
